London First tells FT: ‘closing City Airport would be crazy’

Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of business group London First, said closing City Airport would hit business travellers hard.

“Over two million business people come through the airport every year, heading for Canary Wharf, the City and so on, bringing their trade, know-how and inward investment,” she said.

“We should be making their access to the UK as easy as possible, not harder.”

“There’s also the wider issue of the South East already being short of air capacity without actually taking some away,” she added.

“It’s crazy to suggest we cut back on our links to the world when we’re already being run ragged by rivals such as Frankfurt and Paris in terms of growth in air capacity.”
