Highbury reaches the ‘group stage’ of the London Planning Awards (3 Dec 2009)
The much praised conversion of the former Arsenal football terraces into luxury apartments has been shortlisted three times in the London Planning Awards. Almost 30 of the 70 entries have been shortlisted, with judges describing the calibre of entries overall as “outstanding”.
The Highbury Square development, entered by Allies and Morrison, is shortlisted in the ‘Best Built Project’, ‘Best Place to Live’ and the new ‘Historic Building Management’ categories. Also shortlisted in the Best Built Project category is Regent’s Place, the British Land scheme on the north-side of the Euston Road, Woolwich Arsenal Docklands Light Railway station, Arundel Square and Grosvenor Waterside.
In the Community Scale Project category, View Tube is among the shortlisted entries, entered by the Olympic Delivery Authority. Made from lime green recycled shipping containers, View Tube is a new community and visitor facility with an unrivalled view of the Olympic Park.
Waterloo City Square, which proposes new development at the entrance to Waterloo Station, and Battersea Power Station Masterplan are both shortlisted in the ‘Best Conceptual Project’ category, while the Swiss Re building, universally known as the Gherkin, is shortlisted in the ‘Five years on’ category.
As well as Highbury, shortlisted entries in ‘Best New Place to Live’ include Bermondsey Spa and St James Quarter in Southwark. The renewal of St Martin in the Field, beside Trafalgar Square is shortlisted in the ‘Best New Public Space’ category.
The London Planning Awards are run jointly by the Mayor, London First, the Royal Town Planning Institute, and London Councils.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said:
“It is great to see a constant theme running through these entries - a commitment to improve the quality of life in London, which is one of my key priorities. I am also impressed to see our talented planners once again aspiring to the highest standards of design. Maintaining these standards is essential if we want our capital to remain the best city in the world in which to live, to work and to invest."
The shortlisted entries will go forward to the awards ceremony, with Mayor Boris Johnson at City Hall in March. Last year’s overall winner was High Speed One, the redevelopment of the iconic St Pancras Station.
