I’m excited to have published London First’s Next Horizon strategy, which creates a five-year roadmap for delivering our mission to make London the best city in the world in which to do business.
London is the UK’s capital and a global player. It’s risen to the top of all the main international rankings – but it wasn’t always that way, and we cannot afford to be complacent.
London First was set up by business leaders with the belief that by harnessing business assets (research, connections, marketing power, leadership and more) we can drive positive change. As an organisation, we are uniquely placed to champion the city, not least because we have done it before. Back in the 1990s, London’s prospects looked bleak. We brought together a bold and engaged group of business leaders who have since achieved so much, from campaigning for the creation of the office of London Mayor and Transport for London, for Crossrail, for airport expansion at Heathrow; and created the UK’s largest annual jobs and careers fair for school-leavers, Skills London.
I’m so encouraged that business is stepping up again to lead the way forward for our capital and country, at a time when this leadership is sorely needed.
Along with our members, and the millions of people they employ in the UK, we are pursuing an agenda that will keep London at the forefront of global business, working with and for the whole UK. Because the UK succeeds when London succeeds, and vice versa.
London is a vibrant, exciting place to live and work – but we need to get ahead of the issues that will shape its future, in order to maintain its connectivity, liveability and appeal. That’s why our new strategy focuses on our four key areas of people, place, connectivity and competitiveness, with three cross-cutting themes woven through: innovation and data, the environment and sustainability, and diversity and inclusion.
This strategy builds on our successes and identifies what we need to do to sustain our position in the years to come. We want London to be a capital city the country feels connected to and proud of – one which works for all its residents, commuters, and those who visit it for work, study or play.
We believe we have a well-balanced programme that enables us to deliver for members, champion London and secure change. With your brilliant support in helping to set such an exciting agenda, we can work together to bring it to life in the months and years ahead, and ensure London remains the best place in the world to do business.
