Lending a SpareHand

One thing has been clear to me since the lockdown began: whilst we may all be in the same storm, we’re by no means in the same boat. With this thought in mind, during the early weeks of the COVID-19 outbreak, I felt a growing sense of responsibility to help others in my local area less privileged than myself. Offering to help neighbours with groceries was a start, but surely there was more to be done.
Fortunately, as individuals and businesses discovered new and innovative ways to help people take care of each other, new opportunities to support the local community outside of work quickly became clear.
A member of my running community asked me to get involved with SpareHand: a not-for-profit set up by a small group of friends to help charities find and manage volunteers during these unprecedented times. I was immediately impressed — the app-based solution makes it easy for people to volunteer where they want, when they want. For charities, it provides a free, reliable and safe way of responding to changing demands and getting support to those in need.
I’ve been lucky enough to support some great charities through Deloitte’s society partnerships over the years, and so the chance to help this amazing cause in my non-work day was a complete no brainer.
Thanks to Deloitte, I was able to free up some time under a voluntary work reduction scheme set up to help protect jobs in light of the pandemic.
Since getting involved with SpareHand, I’ve been focusing on growing our community of volunteers in South London and finding new local charities for them to assist. I’ve also been lucky enough to support local causes in Lambeth, for example by delivering meals to families to help stop children going hungry during these difficult times. Doing this during May’s sunshine was a big bonus!
Reflecting on the past couple of months, supporting SpareHand has been a truly humbling experience and has definitely helped me to maintain a sense of purpose outside of work during the lockdown. As I look forward, I’m really excited about growing our London volunteering community in better days ahead.
