London First calls for independent Office for Migration Responsibility
8 December 2019
Responding to Boris Johnson’s comments on a future points-based immigration system in today’s Sunday Times, Jasmine Whitbread, Chief Executive of London First, said:
“Business will welcome Boris Johnson’s aspiration for the UK to stay open to global talent, as well as the additional clarity on what a future points-based immigration system could look like.
“Whoever forms the next Government, immigration policy must take an evidence-led approach to meeting skill needs at all levels. We’re calling for a fully independent Office for Migration Responsibility, which is the best way to ensure the UK economy remains at full strength after Brexit.
“A new fair and managed system should be made simpler and less bureaucratic, with a salary threshold at around £20,000 to avoid exacerbating skills shortages. This must go hand-in-hand with investment in skills and training, including reform of the apprenticeship levy to boost take-up.”
