London First comments on Chancellor's latest support package
23 October 2020
Commenting on the Chancellor’s statement announcing support for businesses, John Dickie, Director of Strategy and Policy at London First, said:
“Businesses in tier 2 have found themselves in a no man’s land where they could stay open but face a double whammy of reduced footfall and less financial support than those in tier 3.
“We are pleased that the Chancellor has heeded the concerns of businesses and his financial package will go some way in helping to protect jobs; the Chancellor now needs to go further and support businesses, for example by committing to extend business rates relief so there is no cliff edge in April.
“And the government should end the nonsensical 10pm curfew for pubs and restaurants in Tier 2 areas, so at the very least families can eat out together later. We also need greater transparency over how measures are expected to reduce transmission, and when restrictions will be lifted, and above all it must fixing the poorly performing test and trace system. This will help reassure businesses that there is light at the end of the tunnel and build confidence.”
