London First responds to Chancellor's extension of job retention scheme
29 May 2020
Commenting on changes to the Government’s job retention scheme, John Dickie, Director of Strategy and Policy at London First, said:
“We welcome the extension of the furlough scheme, which provides a clear pathway and funding timeline of support for businesses across the country. It recognises that the business landscape will not return to normal quickly and the flexibility of bringing workers back on a part-time basis is important.
“There will be many firms in sectors who will be last to return to normal – from leisure centres to pubs and restaurants – who will wonder how the scheme will mesh with their return to work. They must not run out of support before they can start generating income.
“The Government must now turn its attention to thinking about schemes to get people back into work. There will inevitably be an increase in unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, which needs to be tackled by a government-driven package of support to get people back into work.”
