London First responds to government's bailout of TfL
15 May 2020
Commenting on the government’s bailout of Transport for London, John Dickie, Director of Strategy and Policy, said:
“Like many, we’re relieved the Government and Transport for London have secured a deal guaranteeing continued London transport operations over the coming months. Covid-19 has seen TfL supporting the national effort by trying to keep non-essential passengers off the network, and therefore keeping revenues down at about 10% of their usual levels. From nurses to grocery store workers, public transport performs a critical service moving around essential workers throughout the capital, meaning there has never been a more critical time to ensure it is funded. While an agreement is welcome, this rescue package is not a long-term fix. The Mayor is right to highlight the ultimate choice: more Government funding or more devolution or a combination of both.”
