London First responds to Government’s infrastructure building strategy
30 June 2020
Commenting on the Government’s recently announced infrastructure building plan, CEO Jasmine Whitbread said:
“The Prime Minister is expressing the right sentiments on infrastructure projects, and focusing on the long-term health of the nation. However, while there were hints of easy wins, from road upgrades to building on brownfield sites, these need to be done at a much bigger scale. In London alone, there is a funding gap on housebuilding of over £8bn, more than the cost of all the measures announced put together.
“The ambitious tones in the speech must now must be matched by an equally ambitious National Infrastructure Strategy, that can help deliver major transformative projects such as HS2 and Crossrail 2 and demonstrate the commitments to levelling-up the country.
“There is also an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed to really bolster green technologies as we move towards the Government’s net zero target. From incentives to investment, to grants for insulating older properties, there needs to be a long-term approach to the environment as we look to rebuild sustainability in the aftermath of the pandemic.
“Given the level of spend and support during the crisis, it is vital that the Government considers the ways in which private capital and investment can play its part in the ambitious plans for growth in the future.”
