London First responds to Immigration Bill passing second reading
19 May 2020
Our Chief Executive Jasmine Whitbread commented on the Immigration Bill passing second reading:
“Although the Immigration Bill survived the vote, the Government should not ignore the fact that there is growing concern on all sides of the political spectrum that this legislation is not fit for the economy’s needs. Many of those who have provided essential services during the pandemic, from care workers to delivery drivers, would not qualify under the new regime.
“Businesses voiced concerns about the shortcomings of this legislation well before the crisis arrived, warning that it would have crippled many sectors, including social care, construction and hospitality, even in good times. A two-year temporary visa route should be put in place to help businesses adapt to the changes – we should not further tie their hands as they work to get the economy back to full strength.”
