Responding to Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid’s speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Jasmine Whitbread, Chief Executive of London First, said:
“Today’s speech from the Chancellor failed to acknowledge the dawning reality that many of the policies coming forward will not see the light of day if we crash out of the EU without a deal in a month’s time, given the great damage that would inflict on the UK’s economy.
“While businesses in the capital and beyond will welcome plans to invest in roads and better broadband, the Government won’t be able to reconnect our country unless it first avoids no deal and then, alongside these plans, gives the greenlight to critical infrastructure projects including HS2, Crossrail 2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail.
“Greater devolution, now the subject of a welcome White Paper, will help city regions to champion the projects that make the biggest difference to their areas, from transport through to skills investment, but we now need to see action, not just words.”
