London’s stellar planning projects celebrated at London Planning Awards

Winners include Bloomberg’s new European HQ, a new business and retail destination on Regent Street and an ingenious approach to cooling a building.
The winners of the London Planning Awards 2018 have been unveiled, including Bloomberg’s striking new European headquarters in the city’s Square Mile; Dollar Bay, a new residential building in Canary Wharf that uses dock water to cool the building; and St James’s Market, over 261,000 sq ft of offices, shops and restaurants centred around a new public square on Regent’s Street.
The re-development of King’s Cross Station has also been recognised with the Mayor’s Award for Planning Excellence.
The London Planning Awards, now in its 15th year, is organised by London First in partnership with the Mayor of London, London Councils, the Planning Officers Society London, the Royal Town Planning Institute and Headline Partner, Grosvenor Britain & Ireland.
Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of London First, said: “These projects are helping to build London’s future, from new ideas for communal spaces to using the capital’s docks to help cool a building. As London continues to grow, we’ll need ingenuity and imagination to build the places people want to live and work in – and this year’s awards shows the wealth of talent we have working for our city.”
Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe, said: “My congratulations to this year’s winners, all of which once again demonstrate the sheer range of talent in the capital. London continues to be an exemplar of good planning and design.
“The capital’s rapid growth brings with it many challenges and planning has a crucial role to play in ensuring these challenges are met. It’s only right we recognise the creativity and innovation which is helping create a city fit for the future.”
The winners of the 2018 London Planning Awards are:
The Mayor’s Award for Planning Excellence – sponsored by Grosvenor Britain and Ireland
King’s Cross Station. The redevelopment of the grade II listed station has been the catalyst for one of the largest regeneration schemes in Europe. Submitted by Network Rail, John McAslan & Partners, ARUP and Vinci.
Best Project Five Years On – sponsored by Ballymore Group
King’s Cross Station. Submitted by Network Rail, John McAslan & Partners, ARUP and Vinci.
Best New Place to Live – sponsored by Anthology
Winner: Abell & Cleland. Located in Pimlico, this new development provides almost 280 new homes, including a large proportion of affordable homes with access to green space and a newly refurbished play area close by. Submitted by DSDHA, Project Orange, Wirtz International and Peter Stewart Consultancy.
Highly commended: Dujardin Mews, submitted by Karakusevic Carson Architects, Maccreanor Lavington, London Borough of Enfield and East.
Best New Place to Work – sponsored by Berwin Leighton Paisner
Winner: St. James’s Market. Centred around a new public square, St James’s Market combines the largest retained façades in Europe with striking architectural design. Submitted by The Crown Estate, Oxford Properties, Make Architects, Gardiner & Theobold, Waterman Structures, AECOM, Hanover Cube, Balfour Beatty, FutureCity, Studio Weave and Studio Swine.
Highly commended: Alex Monroe Workshop, submitted by Alex Monroe, DSDHA, Structure Workshop, Integration, PT Projects and Philiam Construction.
Best Mixed Use Scheme – sponsored by Battersea Power Station
Bucklersbury/Bloomberg. Bloomberg’s new European headquarters and an exemplary approach to good placemaking and delivering high density within the sensitive historic context of St. Pauls. Submitted by City of London.
Best New Iconic Building or Scheme – sponsored by Hogan Lovells
Dollar Bay. A striking addition to Canary Wharf’s impressive skyline from international award-winning architects, SimpsonHaugh. Submitted by Mount Anvil and One Housing Group.
Mayor’s Award for Innovation in Planning – sponsored by Mount Anvil
Rectory Farm. Delivering new underground warehouses in a greenbelt location, minimising disruption to residents and enhancing the green belt. Submitted by London Borough of Hounslow, Formal Investments, DP9, Carmody Groarke, ARUP, VOGT Landscape Ltd.
Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Environmental in Planning – sponsored by Terence O’Rourke
Dollar Bay. An environmentally friendly housing development that uses London dock-water to cool the building, helping to reduce its carbon footprint by 23%. Submitted by Mount Anvil and One Housing Group.
Cllr Darren Rodwell, London Councils’ executive member for city development, said: “Congratulations to this year’s winners and those who have been highly commended. These exciting planning schemes are making a real contribution to London’s development as a place. It is wonderful to celebrate what is possible when boroughs, developers and diverse local communities work together to unlock the economic, social and environmental benefits new projects can bring.”
John Walker, Secretary of the Planning Officers Society London, said: “The judges had some very difficult decisions to make given the quality and diversity of the schemes but it was a delight to visit and see so many creative schemes right across our great city. It is very important that we recognise, reward and celebrate the best of what is happening in London. These magnificent developments are helping drive London forward and ensure it keeps its reputation as the most diverse and interesting city in the World.”
John Acres MRTPI, Royal Town Planning Institute President said: “Congratulations to the planners involved in these projects, which are helping to create great places across the city. They demonstrate their passion for planning and highlight the innovative ways planners are using the planning system to tackle the challenges faced in London, including the housing crisis and climate change.”
