National Apprenticeship Week – celebrating the capital’s career opportunities
5 March 2019
National Apprenticeship Week has been an opportunity to celebrate the breadth of opportunities that London business is offering. Members have been showcasing their talented apprentices and we have been supporting on social media throughout the week, including posts from Berkeley Group, Gowling, WYG and Redrow Homes.
It was also a chance for our flagship Skills London event to go on the road as part of the Umbrella Training bus tour, promoting careers in hospitality.
Skills London, the UK’s biggest jobs and careers event inspires tens of thousands of young Londoners each year, demonstrating the exciting career opportunities our capital has to offer through hundreds of interactive stands.
We took our Skills London message on board the Umbrella Training group bus, visiting schools and colleges across London, busting some of the common myths about apprenticeships and inviting Londoners to attend this year’s show on the 15 and 16 November.
It’s inspiring to hear success stories from some of the young Londoners who have found their spark at Skills London and gone on to take up one of the thousands of live jobs and apprenticeships on offer at the event. Including Scott Peckham, Business Apprentice in Banking and Capital Markets with EY, who found out about the scheme at Skills London.
But there remain concerns over the accessibility of the Apprenticeship Levy, with new data from City and Guilds revealing just £268m of the £2.3bn Levy fund was being spent on new apprenticeship programmes. This highlights the need to reform the Levy, as recommended by our Skills Commission. To feed into the Government’s review of apprenticeships, take part in their employer survey here.
Look out for our upcoming workshop on everything you need to know about the Apprenticeship Levy later this spring.
We are now taking sponsorship for this year’s Skills London, to enquire contact Matthew Cheadle
